Director's Statement
Death has always been a very fascinating concept to me; from the supernatural to the tragic. It is very mysterious and oftentimes horrifying, representing the greatest fear known to mankind. This is particularly relevant now to my generation as well as the younger millennials who are currently facing uncertainty and anxiety over the future. These feelings have only increased due the recent global COVID-19 pandemic that required months long quarantine and isolation, in addition to the number of mortalities. Now is the perfect time to talk about the deep and natural fears in our society and how they affect us.
For this film I wished to focus on the individual relationships between the characters. The connections we make with others greatly informs our experiences with both life and death. This is particularly important to me considering the difficulties I faced in connecting with others in high school and transitioning into college. I was the person you might describe as a loner, and I still struggle today with my social interactions. Without those connections it becomes very easy to question your own existence, something that is prevalent throughout the film. People, like the characters, want to feel heard and validated.
I do tend to gravitate toward darker material, at least in terms of thematic elements. I have a somewhat skewed vision of the world and this film fits very much into that view. I was very inspired by the Greek Myths that often focused on tragedy and emotions. The myths were largely a reflection of the main issues and philosophical concepts they shared, meant to provide context to the nature of their existence. Likewise, despite their extraordinary circumstances, all three characters are dealing with very simple emotional problems that influence their decisions and interactions. Of course, most of these are spurred by traumatic events in their pasts. As humans we are very susceptible to our regrets and misfortunes. And I want all my stories to reflect that.
